What some people have been saying: Aren't fanfictions 'stolen ideas' too?
Response: ... Are you a complete idiot? Fanfictions don't steal ideas. Fanfics are the expression of love. You love something so much that you spend time writing fanfics to spread the love. You'd be surprised how fanfics actually help promote certain literary works. There are many people who actually learn all about a certain fandom before finding the original work. Besides, where do you find someone stupidly claiming 'I OWN THE ENTIRE [INSERT FANDOM NAME HERE] UNIVERSE!' all over the place?
Fanfiction writers make original events sometimes more interesting. They psychoanalyse the characters and dissect the minds of even the most stubborn (and anti-social) character. Readers would be intrigued by the portrayal of characters in fanfics. If a character is well-defined in a fanfiction, it must be more refined in the actual work. That, in itself, is a form of read-the book or follow-the-fandom promotion.
So what if straight characters are portrayed as gay, gay, gay in fanfictions? Fans write about what they like and what they imagine the characters to be. Even merchandising strategies take advantage of this fact. Haven't you notice?
What a fanfic thief may be thinking about: I steal because I can't write. But I want people to praise me!
Response: As stated before, fanfiction is not only a form of art but also a declaration of love. If you can't write well, learn to become a better writer. One day, you might even be writing your own original novel. If you can't be bothered to learn how to produce better writing pieces (and would instead steal one or some to claim as your own just to boost your ego), you're doing your fandom (that you're supposed to love) an extreme disservice. What a shame.
