The act of stealing fanfiction (fanfic) is nothing new. In the old days, fanfic theft was so much worse that it could even make your eyes bleed. The problem may not be as serious now, but the fact remains that it still happens.
We aren't talking about cases of plagiarism where your ideas are stolen. What we're highlighting here is the act of stealing every word, sentence, construction - basically everything from a fanfic. Some even went as far as translating fanfics into other languages and publishing them on their sites/blogs without acknowledging (or informing) the original author.
On Blogspot and Quizilla, for example, you can easily find stolen fanfictions. You don't have to be a famous writer to have your fanfic stolen. Thieves just don't give a damn. They can't write to save their lives, so they steal other people's work, copy-paste the fics of their choice and publish them to their (equally ignorant) audience. "I wrote this blablabla...", they would claim.
Even on Fanfiction.Net, stolen fanfics exist. If you don't publish your works on FF.Net, you still have a risk of having your fanfics stolen and published under someone else's name. The vast popularity of FF.Net could then create an ugly scene where the original author is considered a thief. Now imagine someone plagiarising your assignment. Both the one who plagiarised and you who had your work plagiarised would be penalised.
Not a pretty sight, eh?
We wouldn't be able to take any legal actions, but we can try to raise public awareness. We call all band together to flag/ban/report fanfiction thieves. Spread the words around, telling the world that we don't appreciate plagiarism of fanfictions.
Joining the mailing list will keep you updated. When we have new thief we need to take down, you will be notified.
Oh, we know there'd be people arguing how fanfiction itself is a form of plagiarism. Care to head over to this page for your amusement?
